Assignment 1 - equus

I wanted to approach this design in two different ways, one was to stay with the lifestyle of my client and keep him away from the outside world. To design houses with little connection to the surrounding environment. The other way to design houses that connect with the outside environment, in order for my client to experience what is going on in the world and take him away from his dark gloomy life.

Design #4

This design displays very long spaces which makes up all of the units, the tower goes up across and down which goes from one space to another. The design was based on my clients life and once again does not display too much natural light, leaving it dark in most places, to keep him away from the outside world and live in the shadows. The biggest opening is on the side of the house which gives the client some sought of connection with the outside world, and gives him the feel of natural light in that area. The house is split into two levels and each level is only a step up or down, I have included and outside area where my client can get out and see the world at his own discretion.

Assignment 1 - equus

Design #3

The approach to this design was to connect the units as seperate containers, so each unit would be apart from each other, and the same connecting device would be used throughout the whole design. the tower once again stands tall above the rest of the house and relfects into the empty unit 7. The spaces are large and the units seem small inside the house but, that was in order to open the mind of my client and keep him occupied in the large spaces.

Design #2

The second design process was looked at in a different way from the first, this is very open, and the fenstrations are alot larger than in the first model. This process led my client away from his dark and gloomy life, to try and start him off fresh and be involved with what is going on in the outside world. The boxes that form together all consist of one big space, with the bedroom and bathroom in the dark areas near the back of the house. The sketches show the initial design which then processed and came out very similar in the final model, they also give you an idea on ahere the units are located.
Design #1

That development eventually came all together and I formed my first analogue model, I wanted the tower to stand out from the rest of the house as the main peak and the rest to follow the same level. the tower reflects rays of light in a way which cast shadows into the empty unit number 7. It also stands 8 metre's above the rest, and has a rectangular shape. My character wanted a place where he could have his privacy and also different displays of light and dark shadows, as he was pulled out of the shadows when he was found by the stranger who helped him, to get his life back on track.

At first in the design process for the residents house, i thought about ways in which i can display natural light through the house in order to create some interesting rays of light. The first sketch was at an early stage, looking at how I could display this light beaming through the residents house, and what it would look like in on the outside of the building.

Custodian of the hall of records - animal hall

Running away from home when he was at the age of 19 Ante was a victim of child abuse. From the age of 8 up until he ran away his father beat him for no reason at all, if his dad was angry he would take it out on his son.
Getting out of their as soon as possible he wanted to start a new life, away from his child beating father and away from his fathers stupid girlfriend. Mum passed away when I was 7 and ever since then my dad has bashed me, for no reason at all. I am the only child in the house and now I am all alone out on the street.
For 3 years I lived in the shit, from dump to dump, shelter to shelter and never did I ever think of going back home. I stole food and blankets to survive and really thought I was going to live like this forever. The streets where a dark gloomy place at night and the only place to be was hidden away from the crime of the streets of New York. One night as I was walking along a street I remember the street name like it was yesterday, Franklin street I was approached by a man with a very long black jacket and a hat, he said “ Come with me and I will take you away from this slum these streets, you will live a better life.”
I took his word for it and went with him, we drove for hours as I remember vaguely when I woke up from a sleep, we arrived at this house, he opened the back door and I got out. He said to me “ follow me inside and stay with us my family and I, we will feed you bath you, you will be treated as a human not some bum on the streets.” I thought to my self, is this a dream or is this man crazy.
I was exhausted so I followed him in and met a very tall women and two other children who were living in the house, the man named Hahns and wife named angelica never really explained to me what they did or who they where they just treated me like I was one of there own. The two other children where very young one the age of 3 and other just 9 months old.
Years went on and I called them mother and father my two step brothers grew up and treated me like there own brothers also. They were a very wealthy family and where never shy in offering to anyone. They asked me if I would like to look after there business it was a hall of records business for animals, I gladly said “yes.”
